Jocelyn Wilkins Wilks
(December 26th, 1936 - November 8th, 2017)
Died peacefully on November 8th, 2017 surrounded by her family. Jocelyn, who was better known as “Grannie” or “Great Grannie,” was a beloved grandmother to 10 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. She is survived by her four children: Elizabeth Coleson, in Arlington, VA and her children Michael, Katie and Ashley; Christine Budd, in Herndon, VA, her husband Larry, and sons Turner and Derek; Victoria Budd in Springfield, VA and her husband Tom, and their daughters Jessica and Nikki; and Jeffrey Wilks in Chevy Chase, MD and his wife Kathleen and their children Christopher, Caroline and Courtney.
Jocelyn was always genuinely interested in learning about her children’s work, friends, families, hobbies and interests. She was a cheerleader to all. In addition to her family and friends, Jocelyn loved nature. She loved being outside in her beautifully maintained garden, where she had a special tree/doll house to serve tea to her grandchildren. She enjoyed hosting tea parties and shared this tradition with her children and grandchildren at every opportunity. Her garden always had blossoming and colorful flowers and plants, and was a safe haven for many types of birds.
She was very active in her community, and most recently served on the executive board of the local neighborhood association. She also hosted the annual Christmas party, opening her home to all who lived in her local community. She looked forward to the monthly ladies luncheons so that she could get to know her neighbors. While she loved to host parties throughout the year, she especially loved Christmas and was known for her delicious Spritz cookies (delivered in lovely Christmas tins) and her beautifully wrapped gifts (which she would deliver to each of her children’s families, as though she was truly Santa Claus). She was a great friend and kept up with friends from Short Hills, high school and college throughout her life.
Jocelyn grew up in Short Hills, New Jersey where she married her husband Stanley Wilks, of Princeton, NJ. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Northern Virginia and eventually settled and raised their four children in Country Club Hills in Arlington. In 1977 Stanley passed away from complications from pancreatitis. When her parents moved to Mexico, Jocelyn loved spending time in their beautiful home in Cuernavaca, and often visited with her children. When her children grew up, she continued to visit with her girlfriends and would return to the states and regale them with funny stories from her adventures in Mexico. She loved all things Mexican and decorated her home with colorful tiles and plates brought back from her travels throughout the years.
She will be remembered for her generosity, her kindness, her strength, her happy spirit, and her unconditional love of her family. She will also be remembered through her famous carrot cake recipe, her Spritz cookies and a good margarita!
A private, graveside service was held for her immediate family on November 15th at Mount Comfort Cemetery, where she was laid to rest next to her husband, Stanley.
