May 16, 1995 ~ September 10, 2023

Born in: Fairfax, Virginia
Resided in: Reston, Virginia

We are heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of our son Nicholas Robert Hoy. Nick passed away at the age of 28 on Sunday, September 10, 2023. He was preparing for his marriage the following weekend to his fiancé, Haley Bennetti. He was a loving son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend, and he will be missed more than any words can express.

Nick was born on May 16, 1995, in Fairfax, VA, to parents Robert Hoy and Sheri Akin (Persson), and grew up in Vienna, VA. In 1998, he was joined in this life by his loving sister Julia. Nick and Julia shared a close and special bond that far exceeded the traditional brother/sister relationship. At the time of his passing, they lived within walking distance in the same Reston community, and regularly visited one another to share meals (of which Nick made Julia cook!), laughs, watching favorite TV shows, camaraderie, and kinship.

Nick attended Wolftrap Elementary School and James Madison High School, where he earned a reputation as an outstanding athlete, hard worker, loyal friend, and great student. His youth was spent on the VYI and Madison athletic fields, where he was a standout and honored athlete in football, wrestling, and lacrosse. Some of his proudest athletic accomplishments were winning the Northern Virginia Regional Championship in wrestling and playing for the Virginia State Championship in lacrosse. Above all, and to the day he passed, Nick strived to live by the values of character, respect, teamwork, and compassion which he learned throughout his athletic career.

After high school, he attended and graduated from Old Dominion University earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Upon graduation he began his career working for Booz Allen Hamilton and recently completed his MBA from George Mason University.

While in college, he met and began dating Haley Bennetti, and they quickly fell in love. After graduation, Haley moved from her home in Dover, DE and joined Nick in Northern Virginia, where they began building a life together. On June 11, 2022, Nick and Haley were engaged, and for the past year have been planning their much-anticipated marriage on September 16, 2023. Nick so dearly loved Haley and they had many dreams for their life together.

Nicholas loved his family above all else and treasured the many traditions of family dinners, bowling, celebrating holidays and birthdays, spending weekends at Grandma and Grampa Persson’s house on the Chesapeake Bay, visiting his Grandma Janis in Great Falls and playing Yahtzee, family vacations, and the many family pets. He was also a lover of the outdoors and spent countless early mornings with his dad for a day of hiking, fishing, or some other crazy outdoor adventure. Nick was passionate about music, and especially loved listening to his dad’s many CDs or playing music trivia games with his mom.

Our hearts are broken, and Nick will be so dearly missed by his family and many, many friends. His impact on those who loved him will last an eternity. Nick is survived by his parents Robert Hoy (stepmom Heather Hoy) and Sheri Akin (stepdad Joe Akin), his sister Julia Hoy, his fiancé Haley Bennetti, who we already and always will consider a daughter, his stepsister Mariah Strock, his stepbrother Conner Strock, his grandparents Janis Hoy and Cliff and Dorothy Persson, and his Uncle Mark Persson.

Following the Burial all are invited to a reception at the Vienna Volunteer Fire Dept. 400 Center St S, Vienna, VA 22180 Catering is being provided by the Vienna Inn.

    • The Keady and Johnson families enjoyed watching Nick and Julia grow up across the street from our house. One of my fondest memories is when Nick was maybe around 4-5. He’d be out playing in the yard and would see my dad heading out for happy hour. Nick would enthusiastically say “MIKE!! Mike, Mike!! Where ya going?” Dad got a kick out of that and responded “to see my friends at the hotdog house (Vienna Inn).” Nick was so kind, so respectful, and just a great person. He will be missed but not forgotten. Our collective prayers and condolences are with all those who loved him.
Brian, Chris, Michelle & Megan Keady
      Mike & Loretta Johnson

    • We will miss seeing Nick at family functions, specifically my nephew’s, Gabe and Mickey’s birthday parties – which they affectionately called Uncle Nick. I will always cherish watching the friendship that my brother and Nick forged and nurtured from high school. Our hearts go out to the family and his fiancée Haley. We will continue to pray for your peace at this time.

      Love,

      Paris, Davyne and Brixton

    • It is with our deepest sympathy for the loss of your son Nick. He was like a part of our family he attended B-day parties, family functions and we would see he and Haley out occasionally. He was just a loving person. His presence will surely be missed. But we do pray you find peace in the weeks, months, and years ahead knowing that he is at peace with the Lord.
      Sincerely,
Wendy Henderson-Kolb, Roosevelt Henderson, Jr., R. Denzell Henderson & Kent Robinson

  3. I’ll always remember the VYI football games and championships we shared together. I love and miss you brother. Rest in peace. – Patrick

  4. Rest in peace to a beautiful soul. Memories never forgotten. Growing up without brothers, but remembering you as one. A light in any room. Thank you for all you did in this work.

    With love,
    Alex P

  5. Beth, and I are deeply saddened by the loss of Nick. Our hearts go out to you and your family during this difficult time. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

  6. Nick was such a cheerful positive young man with a great disposition. I’m heartbroken for the Hoy family loss. Such a wonderful group of people. Such a shock. Hope to all.

  7. Tim and I are deeply saddened at Nick’s passing. We have so many fond memories of Nick both during the VYI years and later at Madison. He always greeted me with a big smile and frequently made me laugh with his quick humor. He was and always will be one of my favorite Vienna kids. Our hearts are heavy and sad. You all are and will continue to be in our prayers.

  8. Sheri, Rob, Joe I can’t tell you how heart broken I was at hearing of Nick’s passing. So many memories of the kids playing together every night before dinner, the birthday parties and just growing up together. My heart aches for all your family. I will be out of the country when services are but know I will be thinking of you and wishing you strength in this incredibly sad and hard time. My love to all of you.
    Mary

  9. Our hearts are broken for you and your family Rob. We are so saddened by your tragic loss. You are in our thoughts now and in the days to come.

  10. Nick, you were one of my best friends growing up. I’ll always remember hanging out at SACC while we were at Wolftrap, core memories I’ll always hold with me.

Even though we didn’t see each other much after school, we’d grab lunch or dinner to catch up. Each time we’d just pick up where we left off, as if nothing changed.

You’re one of the most sincere people I’ve ever met and I’m honored to be your friend.

  11. I was shocked to hear this heartbreaking news. Rob you have been like my brother for so many years and I can’t even imagine what you are going through. Nick was a true gentleman and I know you love him dearly as did the rest of your family. He will be sadly missed but happily remembered by all my family who he was so kind to.

  12. Can’t say enough kind words about you, Nick. Your kindness and friendship was contagious. I’ll hold onto the memories of your father coaching us all throughout VYI growing up. So many memories coming back at once. My heart aches. You were always there when somebody needed them the most. I’ll miss you, bud. Rest easy.

  13. Nick – I was just thinking about our VYI football teams on the Bulldogs and Steelers the other day. I’m so lucky to have started my football career with you and your dad. You two were the foundation for what became such a big part of my life. I’m sorry I spiked the ball in 2006 against SYA and lost the championship – hope you can laugh about that now (I’m still not there yet).

Obviously we went our separate ways after VYI, but I always kept tabs on your athletic career and accolades and was cheering you and all the former Steelers on from afar.

My heart goes out to the entire Hoy family. Thank you again for always showing me kindness and support.

    • Nick- I didn’t know you extremely well but what I did get to know of you was great! You were always so happy and knew how to light up a room! I adored how well you treated Julia! Rest In Peace.

  14. We send our deepest condolences on the loss of your beloved son, brother, and fiance. Words cannot describe the profound loss.
We briefly knew Nick and his Rob during VYI basketball days as our son Erik played in the same age group and my husband, Mark, was a coach.
Sending light, love, and peace to all of you. Mark and Jane Euler

  15. Doug and I are shocked and saddened to hear of Nick’s passing. Time passes so quickly – it was like yesterday that Nick, Patrick and Eric we’re playing football at Water’s field- learning from the masterful coach Hoy! Doug and I cherish those memories! Please know that the entire Hoy family are in our thoughts and prayers. We pray that the peace the surpasses all understanding embraces you in this time of great sorrow.

  16. I was absolutely heartbroken to hear of Nick’s passing. Although time and distance kept us from maintaining contact, I will never forget the sense of camaraderie and mutual respect we shared as sparring partners on the wrestling mat, teammates on the football field, and learning how to snowboard together during ‘Snowmaggedon’.

My deepest sympathies go out to Haley, Rob, Sheri, Julia, and the rest of the family. Nick was an extraordinary person and am proud have been his friend.

  17. I am so incredibly heartbroken for nick, his family and Haley. They live next door to me and have been nothing but amazing people. I am so grateful to have met them. Nick loved to play with my dogs Bella and Jasper and they loved to see him and Haley any chance they could. We are praying for Nick and his family everyday 🤍

  18. I live across the way from Nick and Haley. What a lovely couple. Nick was always so friendly and kind. I often babysit my grand pups and if I was outside with little Jasper the newest puppy Nick would stop and play with him on his way to work.💕God bless Nick and Haley and the family🙏

  20. Nick was like a little brother to me. Someone I pushed and someone that I was very proud of. We went to the same Elementary and High School. We were on the same teams in Football and Wrestling. My fondest times with Nick included playing inside linebacker together his sophomore year and training together in summer wrestling camps. I will most remember Nick for himself being a world-class brother, son, fiancé, and friend. I can assure that Nick is in a better place and has many guardian angels in heaven. God Bless.

We had the privilege of working with Nick & Haley for over a year preparing for their wedding, and during that time, we witnessed their strength, fun-loving spirits, and kindness. They faced planning challenges with grace and always had a smiles and laughs to share.

Nick, and Haley, touched the lives of many, including mine, and Nick’s memory will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find comfort in the cherished moments and the legacy of love Nick leaves behind.

  28. While I never met Nick personally, I knew him from the eyes of his grandmother who lives and adores him dearly. My family and I send our condolences and prayers to your family. Praying the find memories and your faith will help bring you some peace during these difficult days ahead. 32. This may be incredibly strange, so I’m sorry if it’s odd! You don’t know me, but I just wanted to send you a note on this holiday without your son.

Today, while walking in Columbia Gardens Cemetery after visiting the grave of my own (infant) son, I happened past your son’s grave. I was sorry to see he was so, so young at his passing. I thought of your family, grieving the loss this holiday season, and I wanted to take the time to honor him, despite never knowing him. Reading his obituary, he sounds like an incredible person just embarking on some of life’s biggest adventures. I am so, so sorry that your time with him wasn’t longer.

Anyway, I just know that it means a lot to me when people pause a minute to think about my son, and so I took a minute to pause and think about yours. His life touched mine today, even though we didn’t know each other. All this to say, there is another person out there remembering your dear son this Christmas Eve. My sincere sorrow for your loss.
