April 2, 1929 ~ March 11, 2025

Born in: Washington, DC
Resided in: Fairfax, Virginia

Mildred “Millie” Holdaway our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to all, passed peacefully on Wednesday, March 11, 2025, at the youthful age of 95 (because age really is a state of mind).

Millie was born on April 2, 1929, in Washington, DC. to Rose Elizabeth Chaney Hackley & Willie Harding Hackley. During her youth she lived in Winchester, Va; Stephen City, Va; and Washington, DC where she graduated from high school at Anacostia High in June 1947.

In her youth Millie took ballet, which became her passion and she dreamt of being a professional dancer. In high school she enjoyed acting and playing softball. After high school, she worked for P.E.P.C.O and was well known for her speed and agility, playing short-stop for the company softball team.

In 1950 she married Joe J. Holdaway, her husband of 66 years and they had two daughters, Elaine and Cheryl. Joe was in the Army Air Corps, and they lived in Nebraska & Kansas before settling in Arlington, VA.

In 1964 the family relocated to Fairfax, VA where they found their permanent family home. In 1965 Millie would begin working for Fairfax County Public Schools as a secretary, first at Churchill Road Elementary and 3 years later at Jermantown Elementary where she remained until she retired in 1990. In her long career there she was well known for her work ethic and love of the job. Millie was a true people-person, who enjoyed working with her co-workers, but she shined the brightest around the children. The kids knew her well for the variety of toys, making them feel happy and at home when visiting the office.

Professionally, she attended classes at NVCC and spent years attending FCPS workshops, Area or District Inservice Days, County-Wide Conferences or VA State and National Conferences. During this time, she held numerous positions ranging from Secretary and Photographer to President Elect and President.

Millie was honored in 1983 when she was named, “Secretary of the Year”, by the Fairfax Association of Educational Office Personnel.

Millie’s personal life was filled with volunteering such as Sunday School Teacher, Brownie & Girl Scout Leader, PTA & Booster Secretary for the girls many schools, Civic Association, United Methodist Women and Facets. She was an active 61-year member of Fairfax United Methodist Church where she served in numerous leadership roles there as well.

In 1983 she joined the Woman’s Club of Fairfax where she participated in a multitude of community functions such as serving on the Independence Day Committee since 1994, Chocolate Lover’s Festival, she volunteered every Friday as a Docent at the Fairfax Museum

since its inception in 1992 and served as a Docent to the Historic Ford House & Ratcliff Allision House, and a Fashion Show model.

Millie was awarded by the Inter-Service Club in 2008 with the Volunteer of the Year of Award for her service to the Women’s Club of Fairfax. In 2013 she was awarded again by the Inter-Service Club for her service to the Chocolate Lovers Festival since its inception in 1992.

Millie is survived by her daughters, Elaine Campbell, Cheryl Dickerson (Marvin), Sister Patricia Finn (Mickey), 5 grandchildren Kelly Ferguson (Jermaine), Elizabeth McCaslin (Eric), Katie Ferguson, Marvin “Cory” Dickerson, III, Amanda Dickerson, 5 great-grandchildren Trevor Lawson, Faith Dickerson, Caitlin McCaslin, Luke McCaslin, Ariella Hines.

She was known best for her welcoming personality, a never-ending warm smile and her ability to get a job done. She will be missed but we know she is no doubt dancing before the Lord, giving Him the praise and adoration He deserves and smiling with all the love in her heart. She is at rest…at peace.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Wednesday, March 19, at Money & King Funeral Home. Celebration of life will be at the Fairfax United Methodist Church Thursday, March 20 at 11 am, a reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Private Interment will be at the Fairfax City Cemetery.
