Charles B. "Chuck" Bradley

charles bradley

Charles “Chuck” Bert Bradley, age 93, of Ashburn, Virginia passed away peacefully on March
13, 2025. Chuck was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.

Chuck had a love of education, from him being 1 of only 100 high school students from across
the nation selected to attend the National Institute for high school students on the Northwestern
University campus the summer of 1949 to study speech and dramatics. Throughout his years
he performed in many plays like the Boy with a Cart, Ideas of a Play, and The Coming of
Christ..

Then, after basic training in 1951, Chuck attended Tarleton State College in Texas to continue
his studies for the air force. Next, he became an employee for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His work
continued until his honorable discharged from the Air Force in 1955 after receiving the
Commendation Ribbon “Airman First Class Charles Bradley, distinguished himself by
meritorious service as an administrative noncommissioned officer in the office of the Chairman,
Joint Chiefs of Staff During the period of May 1952 to July 1953” said General Omar Bradley.
Chuck Continued his love of learning by being accepted to Georgetown University in the
Foreign Service. After graduating in 1958, Chuck worked as a printing Specialist in the
Publications Directorate Field Printing Office, Office of The Adjutant General, under General
Omar Bradley and then Admiral Arthur W. Radford. During his 30 years of service he received
many commendations. He had a very high security clearance so we were never sure exactly his
day to day job, but undoubtedly he was very good at it.

Chuck is survived by his adoring wife of 68 years, Mary Ann Knooihuizen Bradley, his daughter
Karen Bradley Huffman and son in law Greg Huffman of Charlottesville VA and his 3
grandsons, Reid Kenneth Huffman and Jake Charles Huffman of Charlotte N.C. and Gregory
Curtis Huffman Jr.of Charlottesville, VA, who were his pride and joy. In 1982, Chuck had the
misfortune of having to bury a child. Most people in that situation would have crumbled. Chuck
became stronger and was a great father and a great Pop Pop. Not only to his daughter’s three
sons, but also his son-in-laws niece and nephew. He will always be remembered as Pop Pop.

Chuck never missed a grandparents day, musical number or sporting event, (on a football field,
baseball field, basketball court or even a club to watch one of the grandsons play golf) If he was
not attending some event, you would find him at Sea Colony, Bethany Beach. He loved
spending time riding the waves and reading a book on the beach. From the day the grandsons
were born they were learning to love the beach as much as he did.

Chuck and Mary Ann loved traveling the world. The first big trip was to New England, in 1963
with only 200 dollars. Then they drove Chuck’s white convertible to Mexico in 1961. A trip to
Korea came next in 1966. Then in 71, Europe and a taste of many countries. A Carnival Cruise
to the warm Bahamas in 84. Headed to San Francisco and the Canadian Rockies in 85. A
Christmas vacation was had in Hawaii for a wedding in 1988/89. Then off to Chicago in 89 to
celebrate an anniversary with Del and Mimi Knooihuizen, brother and sister in law, who happen
to have the same anniversary. Then 2 trips in 1990, one to Las Vegas and one to Nova Scotiand Prince Edward Island. In 1995, traveled with friends to the Panama Canal, went to Alaska
first in 1997 with friends and then in 2016 with Karen, Greg and Grandkids. Japan in 98 and a
big trip to Africa in 99. They also traveled to the Scandinavian Countries in 2002, the National
Parks in 05, China in 06, then took the Queen Mary to Ireland, Scotland in 07. In 08 they went to
Budapest to Bucharest and The Black Sea, A cruise to Grand Turk to warm up in 2011 and then
went to drink some wine and eat some delicious food in Italy in 2011. A couple of years later in
2015 a trip to Australia and New Zealand with dear friends the Hershbergers and the last trip in
2022 to New York at Christmas with the immediate family, (Karen, Greg and Grandsons).

Throughout Chuck’s entire life an adventure was had, from water and snow skiing, to parasailing
and of course his many travels. He also spent joyous times acting in plays and choreographing
dance numbers for school plays for Karen in the King and I and Oklahoma. And of course family
time at the beach riding the waves.

Chuck was preceded in death by his daughter Sarah Louise Bradley, brother Wallace Reid
Bradley, and his parents, Charles Maurice Bradley and Marguerite Lynds Bradley DeHaan.
Although Chuck’s journey has come to an end, his memory will forever be cherished.

  1. I was very sad to discover that Chuck had passed away. Chuck and Mary Ann were my glamorous pretend parents as a young child. A trip to Rehoboth beach in their snazzy white convertible is a memory I will always cherish. My thoughts and sympathy are with Mary Ann and Karen. Chuck was a wonderful and kind man.
