Jeanne D. Carney

Jeanne D. Carney passed away on June 15, 2023 at her home in Vienna, Virginia. Jeanne was born in Butler, Pennsylvania on December 16, 1944 and grew up in Butler. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Otto and Mary Derkics, and her brother Daniel L. Derkics. Surviving Jeanne are her husband, John F. Carney; her son, Jonathan F. Carney, daughter-in-law, Ingrid Carney, granddaughter, Caitlyn Carney; sister, Mary Ann DeBonis; sister-in-law (Daniel’s ex-wife) Marylin Buse and niece Katya Derkics.
Jeanne earned a bachelor’s degree in Classical Greek Studies at the University of South Carolina. After graduating she moved to Alexandria, Virginia and taught English at the Congressional School in nearby Arlington. After moving to Alexandria, Jeanne met John and married him in 1969. After leaving Congressional School, Jeanne had a career in the Federal Government working for VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), Action (the federal domestic volunteer agency), and the Department of Defense (DoD). While at DoD, Jeanne worked for the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics where she was instrumental in the establishment of the Defense Acquisition University, Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
Upon retiring from the Federal Government, Jeanne consulted for a few years. And after retiring for good, Jeanne enjoyed gardening in her back courtyard, antique shopping, visiting her son and his family in St. Louis, keeping up with Classical Greek, reading, and doing the New York Times crossword puzzle.
Jeanne was a gentle, kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, sister-in-law, and friend. Her family loved her very much and will miss her.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Jeanne’s memory to a charity of your choice.
