Leon B. Kazunas 1925-2022

Leon (Lee) Boniface Kazunas, 97, of McLean, VA passed away peacefully on June 7, 2022. Lee was born in Philadelphia, PA to Peter and Helen Kazunas. Lee grew up in Philadelphia and attended West Catholic High School (Class of 1943). In 1943, Lee began his service in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following training in Illinois and Hawaii, Lee arrived on Kwajalein shortly after the U.S. gained control of the atoll and rose to the rank of Sergeant. Following more than 2 years on Kwajalein and the end of World War II, Lee returned to Philadelphia, PA where he attended Villanova College, graduating with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1950.

Following college, Lee worked at General Electric in Philadelphia, PA as an engineer. He met the love of his life, Daphne (Dede) Martin at G.E. in 1950 and they were married in 1952 and enjoyed 62 years of a loving marriage until Dede’s passing in 2015. He worked for more than thirty years at Honeywell in areas of defense, nuclear power and military intelligence retiring from the Federal Systems Division in 1982. Following Honeywell, Lee worked at the U.S. Postal Service headquarters in Washington, D.C. as a senior manager in technical procurement.

Lee enjoyed gardening, travelling, celebrating with family and keeping up with the latest technology.

Lee had a very strong faith and was an amazing father to his five children. Lee was a communicant of St. John the Beloved Church in McLean, VA. He was predeceased by his wife Dede and his son James (Jim) Kazunas.

Lee is survived by his children Ann Johnson (John), Richard Kazunas (Kathleen), Barbara Dowell and John Kazunas (Christine). In addition, Lee leaves eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Beloved Church in McLean, VA. at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. A graveside service and interment will be at St. Ann’s Cemetery in Phoenixville, PA at a later date.
