Martha Elizabeth Smith
June 11, 1930 – August 23, 2023

Martha Elizabeth Smith, devoted mother and grandmother, died in her sleep on August 23, 2023. She was born in Calhoun City, Mississippi, on June 11, 1930 to Sally Bell Shearer Smith and James McCord “Max” Smith. The family moved to Houston, MS, where Martha grew up with her younger siblings James McCord “Jim” and Virginia Bell “Jenny.”
Martha attended Mississippi State University where she met her husband Charles and they married after her graduation, in three years, with a degree in English. They moved thirteen times during his career with GMAC, and they retired in Houston, MS.
Martha loved genealogy research and was a Mayflower descendant and active in her DAR and Magna Charta Dames chapters. An avid reader, her home was always filled with books and Martha did not allow tedious meal preparation to impede her scholarship.
In recent years Martha and Charles moved to McLean, Virginia, to live with their only child Sally Simms and her husband John. They spent many happy hours with Sally and John, their three children and five grandchildren.
Martha is preceded in death by her husband Charles and her siblings. She is survived by Sally and John, Virginia Milton (David), Jack Simms (Caroline), Sally Simms (Nick Reiter), and great grandchildren Alice and William Milton, and Tripp, Hunter and Eliza Simms.
The family thanks Anna, Humu, Aicha, Sally, Humu Awa, Vivian and Reina for their extraordinary care. Appreciation also goes to Betty, Kathy and Mack Smith for their loving help.
A private service will be held at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington Virginia.
