Morris Lee Lewis,76, passed away on January 1st in Reston, Virginia
Born on June 26, 1948, in Cullowhee, North Carolina, Morris was the son of Winnie Hazel Lewis (Hooper) and William Arthur Lewis. He graduated from McLean High School in 1967 to then serve his country in the National Guard as part of the Air Defense during the Cold War. While serving, he pursued studies at Shenandoah University and later joined his father in construction, beginning a career that would become his lifelong passion
Morris eventually moved to Ocean City, Maryland to pursue his career and look for the love of his life, whom he found. They were set up by mutual friends and the two were married shortly after their first date. They spent their early years together in Ocean City then Virginia Beach. When they decided to start a family, they settled in Reston, Virginia, where they built a loving home that remains a cornerstone of their family.
In Virginia his passion for construction flourished to become his full time profession. Started as a Project Manager for Tiber then to Tompkins where he succeeded to Vice President. He would take his children to Washington D.C and show them his projects, from construction, till its magnificent completion. These structures will stand as lasting legacies, serving countless people daily. Some of the many include the Judicial and Reagan building, which are just a few of his significant contributions to Washington D.C. ‘s area.
Following his retirement he was a man who could not sit still, he embraced a new role as a remodeler of their family home, transforming it into a haven with a stunning backyard and koi pond. He also became deeply involved in the family business, Canine Carousel, where he managed the retail department and delighted in meeting clients and their dogs, always armed with treats to brighten their day.
Beyond work, Morris loved nothing more than those family vacations, creating memories that will span generations. He planned them every year, in the early years he and Lil would load up their four daughters into their Suburban and drive to Hilton Head South Carolina or to Disney World in Florida. As the years went by the family grew from six members to eighteen, including grandchildren and son-in-laws. This past July, Morris fulfilled his dream of visiting the ocean one last time with his family in Ocean City where they spent five days together. After that vacation came to an end he had already set out to plan their next which was to be in Disney world this coming April.
He was preceded to heaven by his mother and father, aunts and uncles, his sister Joyce and recently beloved son-in-law, Jason Wilt. He is survived by his devoted wife, Lil; their daughters:Christina Wilt and her children: Caleb, Casiey and Colbie. Nikki and her husband Jay with their daughters: Madeline and Alyssa. Betsy and her husband Tyler with their children: Barrett, Reagan and Gunner. Ashley and her husband Grant and their soon-to-arrive son: Greyson. He also leaves behind his brothers, Billy and his wife Mary, and Jim and his wife Judy, as well as countless cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Last but not least, we cannot forget his cherished Golden Retrievers, Hadley and Oakley.
Morris was a deeply beloved husband, father, uncle, cousin, brother and friend. His passing was sudden and unexpected but with family by his side till the end as he had hoped it would be.
While we lost our beloved dad, many have lost a friend and loved one in him. He has been a rock to many, a master of sarcastic humor and witty timing to others. A humor we will all miss but remember dearly. Once he met you, you were marked important to him and from then on he would be by your side when you called for him. There was so much more to him than just a dad, though to us that was his greatest role – he was also a friend, a coworker and colleague, a cousin, brother, stand-in paternal figure to the fatherless, a handyman, a story teller, garden designer, a forever dreamer, the list goes on and on.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication that will forever inspire those who were blessed to know him.
